Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Much of the region is expected to remain near or below freezing today, increasing the risk for slippery and icy conditions on untreated surfaces.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, forecast high temperatures for Saturday are expected to struggle to reach the freezing mark across a large portion of eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and northern Delaware. Highs are forecast in the upper 20s to lower 30s for inland areas, with slightly milder temperatures closer to the coast.
Forecasters warn that despite limited precipitation today, any moisture left on roads, sidewalks, and parking lots may remain icy throughout the day and into tonight. Surfaces that appear wet could still be frozen, particularly in shaded areas, on bridges, and on untreated secondary roads.
In eastern Pennsylvania, high temperatures are expected to range from 28 degrees in the Poconos to around 33 degrees in Philadelphia. Central and northern New Jersey, including areas such as Trenton, Flemington, and Morristown, are forecast to top out near 31 to 32 degrees. Farther south and along the coast, highs may reach the mid to upper 30s, including Atlantic City and Cape May.
The National Weather Service cautions that temperatures hovering near freezing can prolong icy conditions even during daylight hours. Drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists are urged to use caution, especially during the morning and evening when refreezing is more likely.
Residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time, walk carefully on sidewalks and steps, and remain alert for slick spots. Even minimal untreated moisture can create hazardous conditions when temperatures remain near or below freezing.
The cold conditions are expected to persist into tonight, and anyone heading out after dark should remain cautious. Additional forecast updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
