Atlanta, Georgia – Scattered storms are expected to sweep across Georgia Wednesday afternoon, bringing the threat of damaging winds and localized flash flooding to cities including Atlanta, Athens, and Augusta through 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, the highest risk for severe thunderstorms falls between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m., with east Georgia facing a slightly elevated risk. Wind gusts up to 60 mph are the main hazard, and a few isolated storms may bring pea-sized hail.

Residents in Athens, Gainesville, Eatonton, and Sandersville should prepare for downed branches, possible power outages, and street flooding—especially in low-lying and urban areas. Local officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roads and to stay indoors when storms approach. The risk of tornadoes remains low, but isolated pockets of damaging winds could cause brief disruptions along major highways including I-20 and I-75.

Locally heavy rainfall could quickly overwhelm storm drains, and officials warn of the potential for flash flooding similar to last summer’s July storm. Now is a good time to charge mobile devices and secure outdoor items.

Severe weather risks remain until 10 p.m. Wednesday, and additional alerts may be issued if storms intensify later this evening.
