Atlanta, Ga. – A soggy end to the week is on tap for much of Georgia, but drier and cooler conditions will move in behind a cold front by late Sunday. Storm chances will remain high Friday and Saturday, but the front will sweep moisture out of the region to start the new week.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, showers and thunderstorms will expand Friday into Saturday with rain chances peaking near 60% across metro Atlanta, Athens, and Macon. The front will then push through Sunday, dropping storm chances to 40% before skies begin to clear. By Monday, rain odds fall below 10% across north and central Georgia.

Forecasters say while thunderstorms could turn strong at times this weekend, widespread severe weather is not expected. Drivers should use caution on wet roads, especially along I-75 and I-85 during peak travel hours Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.

Behind the front, much drier and cooler air will filter in, delivering a brief taste of fall. Lows will dip into the 60s across the Atlanta metro by early next week with daytime highs in the lower 80s.

Rain chances will remain low through midweek, though forecasters caution additional advisories may be issued if new storm systems develop.
