Atlanta, Georgia – A sharp winter blast will spread across Georgia Sunday evening, bringing the coldest air of the season so far and a bitter start to the workweek. Wind chills will tumble quickly after sunset, creating hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors late Sunday night and early Monday.
The most impactful window begins around dinner time Sunday as north winds increase and temperatures fall. Wind chills are expected to drop into the teens across much of central Georgia, with single-digit values possible in parts of north Georgia, including the Atlanta metro. The coldest conditions are expected between midnight and shortly after sunrise Monday, affecting the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Sunday through 8 a.m. Monday for a large portion of the state. Impacted areas include metro Atlanta, North Georgia, and much of central Georgia. Counties across the advisory include Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Cherokee, Forsyth, Clayton, Henry, Fayette, and surrounding areas. Cities feeling the cold include Atlanta, Marietta, Alpharetta, Roswell, Decatur, Lawrenceville, Peachtree City, Athens, Rome, Gainesville, Macon, and Columbus.
Travelers along I-75, I-85, I-20, and GA 400 should prepare for a very cold drive Monday morning, especially at bus stops and park-and-ride locations. According to emergency management officials, residents should dress in layers, wear hats and gloves, and limit prolonged exposure to the cold. Outdoor pets should be brought inside, and sensitive plumbing should be protected before nightfall Sunday.
This cold snap will also drive up heating demand statewide. Residents are encouraged to use space heaters safely, keep flammable items away from heat sources, and check on elderly neighbors before conditions worsen.
Temperatures slowly rebound Monday afternoon, but cold air lingers into midweek across Georgia.
