Georgia wakes to mild air and dim skies, where damp ground and lingering clouds hint at change. The warmth feels out of place for late December, but it sets the stage for a wetter Sunday and a colder finish to the year as winter tightens its grip heading into 2026.
According to the National Weather Service, much of north and central Georgia stays quiet early Sunday before showers develop later in the day. In the Atlanta metro, rain chances increase by afternoon, with highs reaching the low 70s. That warmth may slow travelers at first, but wet roads could impact traffic along I-75, I-85, and the Downtown Connector.
Sunday night turns more unsettled. Showers become more widespread, and winds pick up as a cold front approaches. Gusts could reach 20 to 25 mph, especially in exposed areas and along elevated roadways. Visibility may drop during heavier rain, making late-evening travel slower than usual.
By Monday, temperatures begin sliding back. Highs fall into the low 60s, and showers linger into the day. The bigger concern arrives after sunset. Clearer skies and colder air allow temperatures to drop quickly, with lows dipping into the mid-20s by Monday night.
That sharp drop raises frost and freeze concerns across the metro and surrounding counties. Any moisture left on roads, sidewalks, or bridges could freeze, creating slick spots during early commutes. Drivers should use caution, especially in shaded areas and on less-traveled roads.
Tuesday brings a brighter but colder feel. Sunshine returns, but highs only reach the low 40s. Cold mornings continue through midweek, including New Year’s Eve on Wednesday, when temperatures start near freezing before a modest afternoon rebound.
While Georgia avoids snow for now, winter’s presence becomes harder to ignore. Planning travel Sunday night or early next week? Share what conditions look like where you are.
