Atlanta, Georgia – Very cold conditions are expected across much of Georgia early Monday, with wind chills dropping into the teens and the potential for patchy black ice creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service Peachtree City office, temperatures early Monday morning will fall into the 20s, while wind chills range from 10 to 20 degrees across large portions of the state. While winds will be lighter than previous nights, the cold air will still produce uncomfortable and potentially dangerous conditions during the morning hours.
Forecasters also warn that lingering snow or melted snow may refreeze overnight, especially across parts of eastern Georgia. This refreeze could result in patchy black ice, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roadways. Drivers traveling along Interstate 75 through metro Atlanta, Interstate 20 from Atlanta toward Augusta, and U.S. Highway 78 and U.S. 29 near Athens should use extra caution during the morning commute.
The National Weather Service emphasized that skies will be mostly clear, allowing cold temperatures to persist through daybreak. Even without strong winds, exposed skin can become uncomfortable quickly in these conditions. Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, wear hats and gloves, and limit time outdoors during the coldest part of the morning.
Travel impacts may be most noticeable before sunrise, with conditions gradually improving later in the morning as temperatures climb above freezing. No additional winter precipitation is expected, but refreezing remains the primary concern.
This cold start may be especially impactful for early commuters, students waiting at bus stops, and outdoor workers exposed to the elements during the morning hours.
Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and road conditions, slow down on potentially icy surfaces, and allow extra travel time Monday morning.
