Georgia – Cold air lingers early, stiffening fingers and frosting windshields before sunrise. By afternoon, that chill gives way to dry warmth, and the air turns dangerously primed for fire across north and central Georgia.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Special Weather Statement is in effect today due to high fire danger conditions developing this afternoon into the evening. Relative humidity is expected to drop to 25 percent or lower, while southeast to southwest winds increase to 3 to 7 mph. Dry fuels across the region heighten the risk for fast-spreading grass and brush fires.
Atlanta and surrounding metro counties face the greatest concern during the warmest part of the day. Temperatures climb into the mid-50s, accelerating moisture loss in vegetation. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to check with local burn permitting authorities before any activity involving flames.
Travel impacts may be indirect but serious. Smoke from small fires can reduce visibility along major corridors, including I-20, I-75, and I-85, especially late this afternoon. Drivers should be alert for sudden haze near wooded areas and avoid tossing cigarette butts.
Conditions improve slowly after sunset as humidity recovers. Tonight turns cooler, with lows near the upper 30s. Monday brings sunshine and warmer air, pushing highs into the mid-60s, but dry weather continues to dominate.
The pattern shifts by Tuesday as a warm front lifts north. Highs reach the low 70s, followed by increasing cloud cover and rain chances Tuesday night into Wednesday. That moisture will help reduce fire danger, though wet roads may slow commutes midweek.
Looking ahead, temperatures remain above normal for much of the week, signaling a broader February thaw across the Southeast. Until rain arrives, fire safety remains critical today.
