Atlanta, Ga. – A stretch of dry days across Georgia will come to an abrupt end this week as rounds of showers and thunderstorms move in from Wednesday night through Friday, bringing a risk of flash flooding to parts of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, widespread rainfall totals of 0.5 to 1.5 inches are expected, with localized amounts between 3 and 4 inches possible in north Georgia. The heavier rainfall is most likely to impact higher terrain and urban areas, where runoff could quickly overwhelm drainage systems.
Cities including Atlanta, Rome, Gainesville, and Athens may see periods of heavy downpours during commutes, raising the risk of street flooding and slower travel. Rural areas of north Georgia could also see localized flash flooding along creeks and streams if the higher rainfall totals materialize.
Drivers are urged to use caution during peak rainfall, especially at night, and avoid attempting to cross water-covered roads. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to monitor forecasts closely and prepare for potential alerts later this week.
The wet pattern is expected to last through Friday, with additional advisories possible depending on storm development.
