Atlanta, Georgia – A significant ice storm is expected to impact north Georgia this weekend, prompting an Ice Storm Warning for much of the region and raising concerns about dangerous travel and potential power outages.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, ice accumulations of 0.25 to 1 inch are forecast from Saturday afternoon through Monday morning, with the highest impacts expected along and north of Interstate 20, including the Atlanta metro area. Even small amounts of ice are expected to make roadways slick and hazardous, particularly on bridges and elevated surfaces.
Areas under an Ice Storm Warning could see enough ice to down tree limbs and power lines, while surrounding areas under a Winter Storm Watch may still experience hazardous travel from lighter icing up to 0.25 inches. Forecasters warn that travel may become dangerous or impossible during the height of the storm.
Very cold temperatures expected on Monday could prolong impacts by slowing ice melt and extending hazardous conditions. Power outages are possible, with localized outages potentially lasting into early next week.
Residents are urged to complete preparations now, avoid travel during peak icing, and have emergency supplies ready in case of extended disruptions.
