ATHENS, Ohio – Deputies reported a methamphetamine seizure and multiple investigations across Athens County on Tuesday.
According to a Thursday media release from the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to several calls for service on Feb. 10, including a traffic stop that resulted in a drug arrest.
Sheriff’s officials said the K9 unit was contacted by Athens County Prosecutor’s Office investigators after they reportedly observed a driver actively smoking what appeared to be a glass methamphetamine pipe on Richland Avenue in Athens. The vehicle pulled into a parking lot, where deputies made contact.
K9 Cody was deployed and allegedly alerted to the odor of narcotics. Authorities said suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were recovered during a search. The items were seized as evidence, and charges will be presented to an Athens County Grand Jury.
In a separate incident, deputies assisted Adult Parole Authority officers in the arrest of Scott Stepp on Frost Road in Coolville. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.
Deputies also documented multiple scam reports, including one involving a victim who allegedly withdrew money from a bank before purchasing Bitcoin after a fraudulent phone call. That case remains under investigation.
Additional reports included an alleged theft on Maple Lane in The Plains, a parking complaint at the Athens County Fairgrounds, a dispute on Jacobs Avenue in Chauncey, and a crash report at Athens High School.
Several incidents may affect students and commuters in the region as investigations continue.
