Grand Junction, Colorado – Snow and 55 mph wind gusts are targeting Colorado’s highest peaks overnight, creating slick travel over mountain passes above 10,000 feet through midnight Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Flat Tops and the Gore and Elk Mountains, including areas near Aspen, Snowmass, Vail and Vail Pass. Snowfall totals between 4 and 8 inches are expected above 10,000 feet, with locally higher amounts possible on wind-favored slopes.

Winds gusting as high as 55 mph will generate areas of blowing snow across exposed ridgelines and passes, especially near Vail Pass and the higher terrain surrounding Minturn and Trappers Lake. Visibility could drop suddenly during heavier bursts overnight and again at times Wednesday.

Drivers crossing high-elevation routes along Interstate 70 near Vail Pass should anticipate snow-packed pavement and brief reductions in visibility. Colorado travelers can check 511 for updated road conditions before heading out.

Snow showers will gradually diminish late Wednesday night, but slick conditions may persist on untreated roads above 10,000 feet even after the advisory expires.
