North Carolina – A burst of winter weather is set to slam the North Carolina mountains beginning Sunday, bringing accumulating snow, powerful wind gusts and dangerous wind chills through Tuesday.

According to the US National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory are in effect for much of western North Carolina, especially along the North Carolina/Tennessee border. Elevations above 3,500 feet could see between 5 to 10 inches of snow, with the heaviest totals focused on higher peaks in Avery, Mitchell, Yancey and Haywood counties.

Very strong northwest winds are expected to develop Sunday and continue into Monday. Gusts could reach up to 65 mph on the highest peaks, 45 to 55 mph along the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge, and 30 to 40 mph across the foothills and Piedmont. Valleys may see gusts of 20 to 30 mph during the afternoon hours.

Wind chills will become a major concern Sunday night. Forecasters say single-digit wind chill values are likely across the mountains, with sub-zero readings possible above 4,000 feet. Wind chills in the teens and single digits are also expected again Monday night.

Travel across mountain passes, including portions of I-26 and other higher-elevation roadways, could become hazardous due to snow-covered roads and reduced visibility. Blowing snow and isolated power outages are also possible due to strong winds.

Residents are urged to limit travel in affected areas, secure loose outdoor items, and prepare for bitterly cold conditions.
