Asheville, NC – Light wintry precipitation is likely to develop Thursday night and continue into Friday morning across the North Carolina mountains and foothills, according to the National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg office. The system could bring a mix of light snow and freezing rain, mainly north of the I-40 corridor, potentially creating slick and hazardous road conditions.
According to forecasters, the highest chances for measurable snow — at least one inch or more — extend from Asheville north toward Boone and Mount Airy. Ice accumulation probabilities reach between 30% and 60% across portions of western and northwestern North Carolina, including Hickory, Marion, and North Wilkesboro.
Meteorologists advise residents and travelers to monitor updated forecasts closely, as temperature shifts could determine whether areas see light snow, freezing rain, or just rain. Even small amounts of ice could cause travel difficulties on bridges and elevated surfaces early Friday.
Drivers are encouraged to plan for slower travel and stay alert for potential advisories or winter weather warnings as the system approaches.
