Asheville, NC – A Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded for portions of western North Carolina as freezing rain moves into the region Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg. The advisory now includes Buncombe, Henderson, Rutherford, and Polk Mountains, as well as nearby foothill areas.
According to the NWS, ice accumulations will primarily affect the eastern-most portions of Buncombe and Henderson Counties, staying mostly east of a line from Swannanoa to Fairview and Edneyville. Areas west of the I-26 corridor—including Asheville, Hendersonville, and Candler—are expected to see little to no accumulation.
Most ice totals are forecast between 0.01″ and 0.10″, with isolated pockets up to 0.25″ across higher terrain and extreme eastern foothills. While these amounts are relatively light, any glaze could create slick spots on elevated surfaces and untreated roads early Tuesday.
The advisory is in effect until 7 AM Tuesday, when temperatures are expected to climb above freezing and end the risk for additional icing. Travel impacts are expected to remain limited but possible in shaded or higher-elevation roadways east of Asheville.
Residents in the affected corridor should monitor conditions overnight and use caution during the Tuesday morning commute, particularly in communities near Fairview, Gerton, Bat Cave, and Edneyville.
