Caribou, Maine – Accumulating snow and rapidly deteriorating travel conditions are expected today across northern Maine, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of Aroostook County, according to the National Weather Service.

The advisory is in effect for northern and northeast Aroostook County until 4 p.m. EST. Forecasters expect widespread snowfall totals of 3 to 5 inches, with localized amounts up to 6 inches, especially across open and exposed areas. Additional 1 to 3 inches are forecast across the Moosehead Lake region, Baxter State Park, and northern Washington County.

Northwest winds increasing this morning, with gusts up to 35 mph, are expected to cause blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility at times. The National Weather Service warned that travel conditions may change quickly, particularly along rural highways and open stretches of road.

Farther south, Downeast Maine is experiencing a flash freeze this morning as temperatures fall rapidly behind a passing cold front. Wet roads are expected to freeze quickly, creating icy and slippery conditions from the Bangor region into interior Downeast areas between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. EST.

In addition, a Gale Warning is in effect for coastal waters until 5 p.m. EST, with west winds of 20 to 30 knots and gusts up to 40 knots, producing seas of 7 to 10 feet. Light freezing spray is also possible.

Drivers and pedestrians are urged to use caution, allow extra braking distance, and monitor updates as conditions evolve.
