Caribou, Maine – Extreme cold settled across northern Maine overnight, with temperatures dropping to -18 degrees in parts of Aroostook County.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, the coldest readings early Saturday morning were recorded at Estcourt Station and Presque Isle Airport, both reaching -18°F. Forecasters said Estcourt Station hit that low just before midnight, while Presque Isle Airport reached the same temperature shortly before 7 a.m.
Additional locations across Aroostook County reported temperatures ranging from -10°F to -17°F, including Limestone, Masardis, Westfield, Mapleton, Fort Kent, Van Buren, and Caribou. Several sites across northern Maine remained below -13°F through the early morning hours.
The National Weather Service said high clouds overnight helped moderate temperatures slightly, preventing even colder readings. The arctic air mass responsible for the cold originated from the northwestern Canadian Arctic, passing through Nunavut approximately 8 to 10 days ago before settling over Maine.
Meteorologists noted that while winds were relatively light, prolonged exposure to these temperatures can still pose risks, including frostbite and stress on heating systems. Residents in rural and northern communities were urged to use caution during early morning travel and outdoor activities.
The National Weather Service shared a detailed temperature report and encouraged residents to monitor forecasts as the cold air mass remains in place.
Drivers, outdoor workers, students, and those without adequate heating should take precautions during periods of extreme cold.
