Arlington, WY – Drivers along Interstate 80 should prepare for dangerous travel conditions Monday as powerful winds move into southeast Wyoming. A High Wind Warning is in effect from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday, bringing gusts up to 65 mph across the North Snowy Range Foothills, South Laramie Range, and surrounding foothill communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, sustained west winds of 25 to 35 mph with stronger gusts are expected from Arlington and Elk Mountain westward through the North Snowy Range Foothills, as well as areas including Buford, Vedauwoo, Federal, Horse Creek, Pumpkin Vine, and the Interstate 80 Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie.
Forecasters warn that the strongest impacts will be felt in transportation corridors. High-profile and lightweight vehicles—including semis, box trucks, RVs, and campers—may struggle to maintain control in strong crosswinds. These conditions commonly contribute to blow-over risks in this region of I-80, especially near exposed passes and summits.
Drivers traveling through the I-80 Summit or windy foothill zones Monday are urged to use extreme caution. Officials recommend delaying travel if possible, particularly for commercial trucking and larger RV-style vehicles that are vulnerable to sudden gusts.
Winds are expected to peak through late Monday afternoon before gradually easing later in the evening.
Residents and travelers should monitor updated weather alerts and road conditions. The National Weather Service notes that winds of this intensity can also lead to isolated property damage, including to roofing materials, outbuildings, and unsecured outdoor items.
