Arlington Heights, IL – With Thanksgiving travel expected to spike this week, the Arlington Heights Police Department is reminding motorists to drive sober, stay buckled, and plan ahead before hitting the road.

According to the department, officers will participate in a statewide safety initiative from November 21 through December 2, joining more than 200 Illinois law enforcement agencies in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High, Get a DUI,” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns.

The effort, funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation, aims to curb impaired driving and increase seat belt use during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Police say extra patrols will focus on spotting impaired drivers and ensuring everyone arrives home safely.

“Alcohol is a factor in one of every four fatal crashes in Illinois,” the release states, citing 2023 IDOT data. Officers are urging residents to make a plan before celebrating: arrange a sober ride, call a cab or rideshare if drinking or using marijuana, and always wear a seat belt.

Drivers who see a suspected impaired motorist are encouraged to pull over safely and dial 911.
