Jackson, Mississippi – Extreme heat and humidity are gripping Mississippi and surrounding states Thursday, with “feels-like” temperatures soaring to 115 degrees in some areas—putting residents at risk of heat-related illness and even death.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. CDT for central and western Mississippi, southeast Arkansas, and northeast Louisiana. Cities like Jackson, Vicksburg, Greenville, Natchez, and Monroe are included in the alert.

Officials urge residents to stay indoors, especially during peak heat hours, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity. Air-conditioned cooling centers are open in many counties. “People without access to adequate cooling are especially vulnerable,” warned NWS meteorologists.

Road crews and outdoor workers are advised to take frequent breaks, hydrate often, and wear light-colored clothing. Vehicles should never be left unattended with children or pets inside, as cabin temperatures can become deadly in minutes.

This heat wave comes amid a summer trend of record-breaking heat across the South, raising concerns for power grid strain and emergency response.

Conditions may ease overnight, but another day of dangerous heat is expected Friday.
