Jonesboro, Arkansas – Visibility could suddenly drop to near zero across Northeast Arkansas this afternoon, creating life-threatening driving conditions on area highways through early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Blowing Dust Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday for Clay, Greene, Craighead, Poinsett, and Mississippi counties in Arkansas, along with Dunklin and Pemiscot counties in Missouri. A Wind Advisory continues until 8 p.m., with sustained south winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts reaching 45 mph.
Drivers along U.S. Route 49, Interstate 555, and rural roadways near Jonesboro and Blytheville may encounter visibility reduced to between one-quarter mile and one mile, with brief drops to near zero possible. Strong winds could also knock down tree limbs and lead to isolated power outages across the region.
Residents, especially those with respiratory issues, are urged to stay indoors as dust levels rise. If driving, officials say to pull off the road completely, turn off lights, and avoid braking to reduce the risk of rear-end collisions.
Hazardous conditions are expected to improve after sunset, though gusty winds may linger into the evening hours.
