Little Rock, Arkansas – Much of Arkansas is ringing in the new year with an unusually mild pattern, as afternoon temperatures climb well into the 60s on New Year’s Day, giving the state a springlike feel to start 2026.

According to the National Weather Service in Little Rock, highs Thursday afternoon range from the lower 60s in north-central Arkansas to the upper 60s across the south and southwest. Little Rock is expected to reach the mid-60s, while cities like Pine Bluff, Hot Springs, and El Dorado see similar warmth. Even northern communities such as Harrison and Mountain View are topping out near the low to mid-60s, well above early January averages.

Overnight temperatures are also staying relatively comfortable for this time of year. Lows tonight and Friday morning are expected to remain mainly in the upper 30s to mid-40s, reducing concerns for freezing conditions statewide. Forecasters say this mild stretch will continue into the weekend, though temperatures gradually trend a bit cooler by Sunday.

Rain chances return late Thursday night into Friday as a weak system moves through the region. While widespread heavy rainfall is not expected, light rain showers could affect parts of central and southern Arkansas, including the Interstate 30 and Interstate 40 corridors. Probabilities remain modest, but occasional wet roads could impact the Friday morning commute.

Emergency managers and transportation officials say no significant weather hazards are anticipated, though drivers should remain alert for slick spots during periods of rain, especially before sunrise. Residents can take advantage of the mild weather to handle outdoor tasks but are encouraged to keep rain gear handy heading into Friday.

Looking ahead, the National Weather Service notes that temperatures remain above normal through the weekend, with additional forecast updates expected as the next system approaches.
