LITTLE ROCK, AR – Extreme heat has gripped Arkansas today, with heat index values soaring as high as 110°F. Residents in central, eastern, and southeastern Arkansas are being urged to take serious precautions as the dangerous conditions last until 8 p.m. CDT this evening.
According to the National Weather Service, the oppressive heat could lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for those spending prolonged time outdoors. Counties affected include Sharp, Randolph, Independence, Lawrence, Jackson, White, Woodruff, Prairie, Monroe, Arkansas, and Desha. Specific cities like Walnut Ridge, Stuttgart, Searcy, Newport, and Batesville are expected to experience the worst conditions.
The heat will intensify as the day progresses, with the highest heat index values likely occurring in the afternoon. The public is advised to drink plenty of fluids, avoid unnecessary sun exposure, and remain in air-conditioned environments when possible. Special care should be taken for vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and pets.
Officials urge residents to monitor for symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which include heavy sweating, weakness, and dizziness. If these symptoms appear, seek immediate medical attention by calling 911.
