Little Rock, AR – Severe thunderstorms are expected to intensify across Arkansas this afternoon, bringing the threat of EF3 tornadoes, large hail, and damaging wind gusts.

According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, a corridor stretching from northeast Texas through western and northern Arkansas faces the highest risk through Friday evening. The most dangerous storms are forecast to impact areas including Little Rock, Fort Smith, Jonesboro, and Hot Springs, with severe activity anticipated to escalate by late afternoon.

Clusters of storms could produce EF2 to EF3+ tornadoes, hail up to 2 inches in diameter, and isolated wind gusts topping 70 mph. Red-dashed areas on the SPC’s hazard map indicate the highest probability for strong, long-track tornadoes, while green-dashed regions highlight the zone at risk for large hail.

The threat is forecast to persist into the evening hours, potentially disrupting travel, power service, and outdoor activities. Residents in central and northern Arkansas should closely monitor weather updates and have a shelter plan in place.

Officials urge those in mobile homes or poorly constructed buildings to seek sturdier shelter and to keep NOAA weather radios and emergency alerts activated on smartphones for real-time warnings.
