Little Rock, Arkansas – Damaging winds and large hail could sweep across central Arkansas by Monday night as a potent storm system moves in.
According to the National Weather Service in Little Rock, thunderstorms are likely to intensify late Monday afternoon (May 19) and continue through early Tuesday. These storms may bring winds up to 60 mph, hail over one inch in diameter, and isolated tornadoes, especially along and ahead of a cold front crossing the state.
Cities including Little Rock, Conway, Russellville, and Hot Springs may be hit hardest. Travel along I-40 and I-30 could be hazardous during the evening commute. The Arkansas River Valley near Fort Smith could see storms arrive first, then move east toward central Arkansas. Flash flooding is also a concern, with localized downpours possibly exceeding two inches in some areas.
Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and prepare for possible power outages. Avoid non-essential travel Monday night, particularly after 6 p.m., when severe cells are expected to peak.
By Tuesday evening, storms are expected to exit the state, giving way to drier, cooler conditions midweek.
