Tulsa, Oklahoma – A sweltering heat wave is gripping eastern Oklahoma and parts of western Arkansas this weekend, with heat index values pushing as high as 109°F by Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, a Heat Advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. Saturday, and another advisory will go into effect Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. The warnings cover dozens of counties across eastern Oklahoma and stretch into western Arkansas, including Fort Smith, Tulsa, McAlester, and Muskogee.

Cities such as Claremore, Okmulgee, and Bartlesville can expect peak heat index values ranging from 105°F to 109°F, making outdoor conditions hazardous, especially for those working or exercising outside. In Grove, Tahlequah, and Stilwell, Sunday’s advisory warns of heat index values up to 105°F.

Officials urge residents to avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, stay in air-conditioned environments, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Light clothing, hydration, and breaks in the shade are critical for preventing heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

This marks one of the hottest stretches so far this summer, with more advisories possible if conditions persist into next week.
