A flash flood warning is in effect for parts of southwestern Arkansas, southeastern Oklahoma, and northeastern Texas, as heavy thunderstorms bring a significant risk of flooding. The warning is active until midnight CDT tonight.
According to the National Weather Service, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing between 2 and 3 inches of rainfall in the warned area, with additional amounts expected. Flash flooding is already occurring in some areas, with the potential for more intense flooding in low-lying and poorly-drained spots.
The affected regions include several counties in Arkansas, such as Hempstead, Howard, Little River, Miller, and Sevier, along with parts of southeastern McCurtain County in Oklahoma and Bowie and Red River counties in Texas.
Flash flooding is expected to impact urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. Locations such as Texarkana, De Queen, Ashdown, Nashville, New Boston, and Foreman could see significant flooding. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.
For safety, residents are advised to “turn around, don’t drown” if encountering flooded areas.
