Memphis, Tennessee – Temperatures across Memphis and the greater Mid-South are expected to soar Wednesday, pushing heat index values as high as 108 and prompting a Heat Advisory for much of the region until 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the advisory covers portions of east Arkansas, southeast Missouri, north Mississippi, and west Tennessee, including major cities like Memphis, Jonesboro, Tupelo, Dyersburg, and Blytheville. The warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. CDT, as dangerously high humidity and hot air combine to create life-threatening conditions, especially for outdoor workers and vulnerable groups.

Local health officials urge residents in Shelby County, Crittenden County, and throughout the affected counties to stay indoors if possible, avoid strenuous activities, and check on elderly relatives and neighbors. Popular roads and highways, including I-40 and I-55, may see delays or incidents as vehicles overheat and drivers face fatigue. Businesses and schools with outdoor activities are advised to reschedule or move events inside.

To stay safe, drink plenty of water, remain in air-conditioned spaces, and never leave children or pets in parked cars. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends regular rest for anyone working outdoors.

This is the second major heat advisory this July for the region, as a persistent high-pressure system continues to drive temperatures well above normal. More advisories are possible later in the week if conditions do not improve.

Warnings remain in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday. Stay tuned for further updates from local officials and the National Weather Service.
