Memphis, TN – Residents across Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 1 AM CDT Sunday, October 19, as storms move through the Mid-South overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, the watch covers several counties including Shelby, DeSoto, Marshall, Lafayette, and Phillips, with potential impacts extending into north Mississippi and east Arkansas. Forecasters say conditions are favorable for isolated tornadoes, hail up to quarter size, and wind gusts reaching 70 miles per hour.
The Weather Service reports that over 1.7 million people, including residents of Memphis, Oxford, Holly Springs, and Forrest City, are within the watch area. Officials advise staying alert to changing weather conditions and having multiple ways to receive warnings overnight.
Drivers are urged to avoid travel during severe storms, as strong gusts and hail may cause sudden visibility loss or road debris.
The storm system is expected to move eastward after midnight, with most activity diminishing toward early morning hours Sunday.
