Memphis, Tennessee – A dangerous heat wave is gripping Memphis and much of West Tennessee, with heat index values soaring as high as 109°F through 9 p.m. Thursday, prompting an urgent advisory for millions across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a heat advisory remains in effect for Shelby, Fayette, Dyer, Gibson, Madison, and surrounding counties, stretching into North Mississippi, Southeast Missouri, and East Arkansas. Cities including Jackson, Dyersburg, Tupelo, and Jonesboro are all under the advisory as temperatures and humidity combine for hazardous conditions through tonight.

Residents in Memphis and Germantown should take extra precautions, especially during afternoon and early evening hours when heat stress peaks. Those working outdoors are urged to take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends drinking plenty of water and never leaving children or pets in vehicles.

In West Tennessee, utility crews are on alert as power usage climbs and cooling centers open in Jackson, Brownsville, and Union City. Emergency managers urge checking on elderly neighbors and limiting outdoor activities.

This marks the hottest day of July so far, with heat advisories likely to continue if the weather pattern holds. Stay tuned for further updates as conditions may trigger additional warnings through the weekend.
