Jonesboro, Ark. – Residents across eastern Arkansas and north Mississippi are facing dangerous heat conditions today as temperatures soar and humidity pushes the heat index past 105° by midday.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT Friday for counties including Craighead, Crittenden, Phillips, and Lee in Arkansas, as well as Coahoma, Quitman, and Tallahatchie in Mississippi. In Clay and Greene Counties, including Paragould and Piggott, the advisory has been newly expanded with expected heat index values up to 105°.
Cities like Jonesboro, Clarksdale, and Helena-West Helena could see heat illnesses rise, especially for those spending extended time outdoors or without adequate cooling. Public health officials urge residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
Local power companies may also see increased demand through the afternoon. With no immediate cooling trend in sight, today’s heat could mark the start of a broader summer pattern.
Warnings remain in effect through 8 p.m., with more advisories possible if weekend highs climb further.
