Pocahontas, AK – A dangerous heat wave will blanket Lawrence, Randolph, and Sharp counties on Saturday, with heat index values soaring as high as 115° by late afternoon. Residents across northeast Arkansas should take immediate precautions as oppressive temperatures grip the region from noon until 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Little Rock, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for the area, including cities like Pocahontas, Walnut Ridge, Cave City, and Ash Flat. The warning calls for heat index values between 110 and 115 degrees—levels known to cause heat-related illnesses much more rapidly.
City officials urge everyone in Hardy, Hoxie, and Attica to stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Those who must be outside should drink extra fluids, avoid strenuous activity, and check on elderly neighbors or those without access to cooling. Schools, local businesses, and outdoor workers are encouraged to adjust schedules and offer cooling breaks to minimize risk.
Saturday’s extreme heat follows a week of rising temperatures and could rival records set during previous Arkansas summers. The National Weather Service advises all residents to monitor for updates, as additional warnings or extended heat advisories could be issued into Sunday.
