Shreveport, Louisiana – Residents across Louisiana, east Texas, and southern Arkansas are facing a dangerous heat wave as temperatures and humidity combine to push the heat index as high as 108 degrees Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, a heat advisory remains in effect for the region—including Caddo, Bossier, Ouachita, Bowie, Cass, and Union counties—until 7 p.m. Thursday. Emergency officials are urging residents to avoid prolonged outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those without air conditioning.

Cities from Shreveport and Monroe to Longview, Lufkin, and Texarkana are expected to see the highest heat index values by late afternoon. Area schools and businesses may adjust schedules or limit outdoor events, and local emergency rooms are preparing for a potential uptick in heat-related illnesses. Major highways such as I-20 and US-71 may see slower travel as drivers contend with intense heat and possible vehicle overheating.

Officials recommend limiting strenuous activity to early morning or evening, wearing light clothing, and staying in shaded or air-conditioned areas. “This level of heat can be life-threatening,” warned local emergency management. “Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and call 911 if you or someone near you becomes confused, loses consciousness, or stops sweating.”

Heat advisories may be extended if dangerous conditions persist. Stay tuned for further updates from local authorities and the National Weather Service.
