Flagstaff, AZ – A winter weather advisory is in effect for the Kaibab Plateau and Chuska Mountains, with snow and strong winds expected above 7,500 feet starting Thursday night and continuing through early Sunday. The National Weather Service warns of potentially hazardous travel conditions, with snow accumulations, gusty winds, and reduced visibility likely across affected areas.
For the Kaibab Plateau, the advisory begins at 11 p.m. Thursday and will remain in effect until 11 a.m. Saturday. Snow accumulations are forecasted to reach between 3 and 10 inches, with wind gusts up to 40 mph. This includes areas around Jacob Lake and the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, which could receive up to 4 inches. Travelers should expect slick roads and reduced visibility, particularly over bridges and mountain passes. Heavy snowfall could create challenging driving conditions for Friday’s morning and evening commutes.
The Chuska Mountains and Defiance Plateau will also be under an advisory from noon Friday until 6 a.m. Sunday. Snow totals in this region are expected to range between 3 and 8 inches, with the heaviest snowfall around Buffalo Pass. Wind gusts may reach 40 mph, making travel especially dangerous as moderate to heavy snowfall accumulates on roads, creating slick surfaces and low visibility.
Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution, and check az511.gov or call 511 for the latest road conditions and closures. With hazardous conditions expected across both regions, residents and visitors should prepare for winter driving and consider postponing travel where possible.
