Flagstaff, AZ – A powerful winter storm is set to impact northern and eastern Arizona from Thursday afternoon through late Thursday night, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions. Areas above 6,000 feet, including the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains, could see between 3 and 14 inches of snow accumulation.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Flagstaff, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Wednesday for locations above 7,000 feet, including Flagstaff, Williams, and Forest Lakes. These areas could receive an additional 1 to 7 inches of snowfall before conditions briefly improve. However, a Winter Storm Watch is set to take effect Thursday afternoon, with the storm expected to bring significant snow and gusty winds up to 50 mph.
In the White Mountains, including Show Low, Pinetop, and Greer, similar conditions are forecasted. Snowfall totals could reach 14 inches in some higher elevations, with strong winds creating blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility.
Authorities are urging residents and travelers to exercise caution. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are expected to become slick and hazardous. The Arizona Department of Transportation advises checking road conditions at az511.gov before traveling and carrying a winter survival kit, including blankets, food, and emergency supplies.
Those planning to travel in affected regions should monitor updated forecasts and consider delaying trips as conditions worsen. Power outages and downed trees are possible due to heavy snow and high winds.
