Globe, Ariz. – A Flood Watch has been issued for parts of south-central Arizona from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening, as deep tropical moisture moves northward and brings the risk of heavy rainfall and localized flooding, according to the National Weather Service in Phoenix.
The watch covers New River Mesa, Tonto Basin, the Mazatzal and Superstition Mountains, Rio Verde/Salt River, San Carlos, Globe, Miami, and Superior. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches, with locally higher amounts, could lead to dangerous runoff and rapid rises in creeks and washes.
According to the weather service, excessive rainfall may cause flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, including rural roadways and small stream crossings. Pinal and Gila County emergency managers urge residents to monitor forecasts closely and be ready to move to higher ground if water levels rise.
Drivers are reminded to never attempt to cross flooded roads—even a few inches of moving water can sweep away vehicles. Outdoor events and recreation near rivers or canyons should be postponed until conditions improve.
Forecasters expect the heaviest rain to fall late Friday night into Saturday as moisture from a tropical system interacts with a slow-moving disturbance. Drier weather should return late Sunday into Monday.
