Flagstaff, Arizona – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the White Mountains of eastern Arizona from 5 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Sunday, with accumulating snow expected to create hazardous travel conditions at higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, snowfall is expected above 7,000 feet, with total accumulations ranging from 4 to 10 inches. The most persistent and heaviest snowfall is forecast to occur on Saturday. The advisory includes mountain communities such as Pinetop, Greer, and Show Low.
Forecasters say roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and hazardous as snowfall intensifies. Periods of low visibility combined with snow-covered roadways may make travel dangerous, and officials advise against unnecessary travel during the advisory period.
While snowfall amounts will vary by location and elevation, areas such as Alpine could receive 2 to 4 inches of snow, while Pinetop-Lakeside may see 1 to 2 inches. Higher elevations are expected to see the greatest impacts, particularly during Saturday.
Travel is not recommended during periods of heavier snowfall, especially overnight and during early morning hours when road temperatures are coldest. Even minor snowfall can create icy conditions on untreated roads.
Residents and travelers are urged to monitor forecast updates and check road conditions before traveling. Motorists who must drive should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
For the latest road conditions and closures, drivers are encouraged to visit az511.gov or call 511. Mountain communities, weekend travelers, and outdoor recreation visitors should plan accordingly for winter weather impacts through early Sunday.
