Show Low, Arizona – Travel across the White Mountains could become dangerous beginning Friday morning as a winter storm brings periods of heavy snow to higher elevations, with the worst conditions expected Saturday. Snow-covered roads and low visibility may make driving hazardous or impossible above 7,000 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday morning through late Saturday night for the White Mountains. Snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are possible above 7,000 feet, with locally higher totals reaching up to 18 inches in the highest terrain around Greer and nearby peaks.
Communities including Pinetop, Show Low, and Greer could see snow intensify Friday evening, with the heaviest snowfall expected Saturday morning and afternoon. Bridges and elevated roadways along State Route 260 and mountain routes will likely become slick quickly as temperatures remain cold enough to support steady accumulation.
Officials advise delaying non-essential travel, especially during peak snowfall periods. Those who must travel should carry winter safety supplies and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions and reduced visibility.
The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through late Saturday night, and additional alerts may be issued as confidence increases in snowfall amounts and impacts.
