TUCSON, Ariz. – Extreme heat will push Tucson into dangerous territory again Sunday as temperatures soar near 107 degrees, combining with a chance of late-day thunderstorms that could hit parts of the metro.

According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, an Excessive Heat Warning remains in place until 8 p.m. Sunday, urging residents to avoid prolonged outdoor activity. The agency warns that hot pavement can burn skin within seconds and that storm activity could lead to sudden street flooding, especially along I-10 near downtown.

Saturday brought dry skies with isolated thunder cells in eastern Pima County, but forecasters expect Sunday to intensify with higher storm chances. By late afternoon, unstable air could fuel lightning and localized heavy downpours, especially east toward Vail and Oro Valley. Gusty winds may also reduce visibility on stretches of I-19 and rural highways.

Heat remains the main threat through the weekend. Emergency managers advise staying hydrated, checking on vulnerable neighbors, and limiting travel during peak heat hours between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Cooling centers across Pima County remain open and will extend hours through Sunday evening.

Looking ahead, Tucson sees another scorching day Monday with highs near 103 and storm chances persisting through midweek. By Tuesday and Wednesday, daytime highs dip into the upper 90s but daily thunderstorms could bring localized flash flooding.

Residents should expect rapid weather shifts this week. Stay alert for updated watches and warnings as storms may redevelop quickly into midweek.
