TUCSON, Ariz. – Drivers in southern Arizona should brace for heavy rain and possible flooding as a Flood Watch takes effect Friday afternoon. Low-water crossings, including stretches along State Route 86 and Interstate 10 near Tucson, could quickly become impassable during downpours.
According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, thunderstorms will intensify Friday and continue through Saturday. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected across the metro, with up to 4 inches possible in nearby mountains. Officials warn that excessive runoff may cause creeks, washes, and drainage areas to overflow, especially in Pima, Cochise, and Santa Cruz counties.
Communities such as Sierra Vista, Green Valley, and Nogales may face temporary road closures if flash flooding develops. Emergency crews urge residents to avoid driving through flooded streets and instead seek alternate routes. Even shallow water on pavement can quickly sweep away vehicles.
Moisture tied to the remnants of Hurricane Lorena is fueling this system. While storms will taper off late Saturday, forecasters say the ground will remain saturated, keeping flash flooding a risk through the weekend. Residents should charge devices, secure outdoor items, and monitor alerts in case new warnings are issued.
Conditions improve Sunday with sunny skies returning, but heat will rise again early next week.
