Flagstaff, Arizona – Darkening clouds are expected to build over the high country as Monday unfolds, replacing a calm morning with a much more active monsoon pattern. Roads that begin the day dry could quickly become wet and slippery by the afternoon commute as thunderstorms expand across northern Arizona.

Drivers and outdoor recreation plans may be interrupted as showers and thunderstorms become increasingly widespread after late morning. According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are likely between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., followed by additional showers and isolated thunderstorms into the evening. Flagstaff is expected to reach a high near 82 degrees, with a 70% chance of precipitation.

Motorists traveling along Interstate 40, Interstate 17, Historic Route 66, and Highway 89 should be prepared for rapidly changing weather. Brief heavy rain could reduce visibility, while ponding water on roads and occasional lightning may create hazardous driving conditions. Gusty winds near stronger storms could also make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles.

Storm activity continues Monday night with a 60% chance of showers, and an even wetter pattern develops Tuesday. The National Weather Service forecasts an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday, keeping the threat of localized flooding in low-lying areas and normally dry washes elevated. Wednesday remains active with another 80% chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms, although temperatures cool slightly to around 78 degrees.

Across the Southwest, the monsoon pattern will continue fueling scattered thunderstorms through midweek. While not every location will experience heavy rain, any storm can produce frequent lightning, brief downpours, and localized travel delays. If you’re hiking, camping, or visiting higher elevations, head indoors immediately if thunder is heard.
