Arizona — Snowflakes swirl sideways under gray skies as wind pushes cold air across the high country. Roads shine with moisture, and winter conditions are tightening their grip on northern Arizona.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect today for Flagstaff and surrounding high elevations above 6,500 feet. Snow develops steadily through the morning, becoming heavier at times by late morning and afternoon. Winds gust as high as 40 mph, reducing visibility during heavier bursts.
Most of Flagstaff can expect 2 to 4 inches of snow, while higher elevations may see 3 to 6 inches, with localized totals near 8 inches. Snowfall intensity and wind combine to create slick, rapidly changing road conditions. Bridges and overpasses are especially vulnerable.
Travel impacts increase through the day and remain elevated into the evening commute. I-40, I-17, and Route 89 may experience sudden slowdowns as blowing snow drifts across lanes. Plan extra time if driving and keep headlights on during snowfall. To be fair, conditions may briefly ease between bands, but hazards return quickly.
By tonight, snow tapers off as skies slowly clear. Temperatures drop sharply, settling near 10 degrees. Any slush left behind will freeze, raising the risk of black ice early Friday.
Friday stays cold and breezy with patchy blowing snow lingering during the morning. Highs hover near freezing, while wind chills dip below zero at times. Roads improve gradually through the afternoon as sunshine returns.
The weekend brings welcome relief. Saturday and Sunday turn sunny and calmer, with highs climbing into the upper 30s and low 40s. Nights remain cold, but conditions stabilize heading into next week.
Meteorologists caution that winter patterns remain active across the Southwest. For now, caution is key. Are roads slick where you are this morning? Share what you’re seeing.
