Flagstaff, Ariz. – Isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop across northern and eastern Arizona Monday, with the strongest activity forecast between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The National Weather Service warns that storms may bring gusty winds, heavy downpours, and a low to moderate chance of flash flooding, especially south of the Mogollon Rim and across the White Mountains.
According to the Weather Service in Flagstaff, wind gusts could reach 35 to 45 mph near stronger cells, while localized rainfall totals may climb above half an inch. Frequent lightning is also a concern, creating hazards for outdoor recreation and travel along Highways 60, 260, and 191.
Cities including Payson, Show Low, and Springerville sit within the higher risk zone for afternoon storms. Drivers should remain alert for sudden water pooling on rural roadways, while hikers and campers are urged to avoid washes and seek shelter at the first sign of thunder.
Storm chances diminish by Monday night, though forecasters say additional scattered storms are possible later this week.
