Phoenix, Arizona –An unrelenting heat wave is pushing Phoenix into dangerous territory, with temperatures expected to soar as high as 116°F through 8 p.m. Tuesday, prompting an Extreme Heat Warning for Maricopa County and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, the warning covers cities across the Valley, including Mesa, Chandler, Avondale, Glendale, and Scottsdale. Afternoon highs Monday and Tuesday are forecast between 110°F and 118°F, creating what meteorologists call a “major heat risk” for heat exhaustion and stroke. Overnight lows near 90°F offer little relief.

Local officials urge residents to avoid outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., especially on job sites. OSHA recommends frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Symptoms of heat illness include cramps, dizziness, nausea, and confusion—heat stroke requires immediate 911 attention.

In Phoenix, Goodyear, Tempe, and Sun Lakes, public cooling shelters are open, and Maricopa County residents can call 2-1-1 or visit maricopa.gov/heat to locate cooling centers and hydration resources.

This is Arizona’s most intense heat event of the summer so far. The warning remains in effect until at least 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a chance of relief from thunderstorms by midweek.
