Flagstaff, Ariz. – Strong monsoon storms are expected to develop across northern Arizona this afternoon and evening, bringing dangerous winds, frequent lightning, and the potential for flash flooding. The greatest threat will be south of the Grand Canyon, along the Mogollon Rim and into the White Mountains.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, isolated to scattered thunderstorms could produce wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph, small hail, and heavy downpours capable of causing localized flooding in low-lying areas. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded washes, where conditions can become life-threatening within minutes.
Communities along State Route 260 near Payson and U.S. 60 toward Show Low may see reduced visibility and sudden road hazards as storms move through. Lightning will be frequent, increasing the risk for wildfires despite wet conditions. Outdoor activities, especially around the Grand Canyon and nearby trail systems, should be delayed until storms pass.
The monsoon pattern is expected to continue through midweek, with additional rounds of storms possible each afternoon. Residents should prepare for rapidly changing weather and monitor local alerts.
