Phoenix, AZ – Rain chances will increase across Arizona through Thursday as tropical moisture pushes into the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix. The heaviest rainfall and strongest storms are expected to develop Thursday, bringing possible travel delays and flash flooding concerns.

According to NWS forecasters, a low-pressure system off the southern coast of California is pulling Pacific moisture northward, including remnants of Tropical Cyclone Mario. This setup will boost the potential for widespread showers and thunderstorms across southern Arizona and into southeastern California.

Forecasters say storms that form could produce locally heavy rainfall of up to 1 inch in some areas, with isolated totals reaching higher in thunderstorms. Gusty winds may also cause blowing dust, reducing visibility on roads.

The highest chances for rain will occur Thursday, particularly in Maricopa County, Pinal County, and surrounding areas. Officials caution that even short bursts of heavy rainfall may result in isolated flash flooding in urban and low-lying areas.

The NWS also warns that motorists should be alert for slick roads, poor visibility, and rapidly changing conditions during afternoon and evening commutes.
