Phoenix, AZ – Residents across Arizona should prepare for stormy weather returning late this week, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning of potentially strong thunderstorms beginning Friday and lasting through the weekend.

According to the NWS Phoenix office, an unseasonably strong low-pressure system will move inland from Southern California by Thursday, bringing increased moisture and instability across much of Arizona. This setup mirrors conditions that have previously produced severe weather in the region.

Forecasters say isolated showers and storms will begin in southeastern Arizona on Thursday, followed by a 30–60% chance of scattered thunderstorms across south-central Arizona—including the Phoenix metro area—by Friday. Rain chances will also remain elevated for the state’s high terrain into the weekend.

While the timing and intensity of storms on Friday remain uncertain, officials caution that ingredients for severe weather will be in place. This means damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and hazardous travel could all be concerns heading into the weekend.

The NWS advises residents to monitor weather updates closely, especially those planning to drive or spend time outdoors. Stronger storms could create sudden travel delays and localized flooding in low-lying areas.
