Yuma, Ariz. – Rising waters along the Gila River are prompting an Areal Flood Warning in Yuma County, with low water crossings and farmland at risk through 9 a.m. Friday. The National Weather Service said a USGS gauge near Dome shows river levels above action stage following heavy rainfall Thursday.
According to the Weather Service in Phoenix, several low-lying areas may become impassable as floodwaters spread. Drivers are urged to avoid roads covered in water, particularly near Wellton and the Dome Valley. Farm fields bordering the Gila River could also see flooding before conditions ease later this morning.
Officials warn that even shallow floodwaters can be life-threatening. Motorists should heed barricades, stay away from arroyos and washes, and use alternate routes if travel is necessary. Yuma County sheriff’s deputies are monitoring road conditions and may issue closures as water levels fluctuate.
The flood threat is expected to diminish after mid-morning, though runoff may continue to impact fields and rural roads into the afternoon. Additional warnings could be issued if more rain develops over the weekend.
