FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – A flash flood warning is in effect for parts of Gila County overnight Friday as heavy rain triggers dangerous conditions near the Washington Fire scar.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, radar indicated thunderstorms dropped up to three-quarters of an inch of rain across the burn scar by 1:30 a.m., with additional rainfall expected through 4:30 a.m. Officials warn that flash flooding is ongoing or imminent, with water and debris threatening creeks, roads, and campgrounds in the area.
The most at-risk communities include Washington Park and Whispering Pines, where runoff can rapidly overwhelm low-lying areas. Shadow Rim Ranch, a nearby recreation site, is also in the flood zone. Roads and driveways could wash out, leaving some residents stranded if conditions worsen.
Emergency managers urge anyone in the warning area to avoid travel overnight and move to higher ground immediately if water rises. Floodwaters may carry rocks, mud, and fallen trees, creating life-threatening hazards that cannot be crossed safely.
The flash flood warning remains active until 4:30 a.m. Friday, with the potential for additional alerts if storms persist.
