Flagstaff, AZ – Northern Arizona is bracing for a significant winter storm, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected to impact travel and daily life from Wednesday through Friday. Multiple weather alerts have been issued for the region, including Winter Weather Advisories and a Winter Storm Watch.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight Wednesday to 11 a.m. MST for areas above 7,000 feet, including the White Mountains, Mogollon Rim, and Flagstaff. Snow accumulations are expected to range from 2 to 7 inches, with local amounts up to 10 inches at higher elevations.
A more severe Winter Storm Watch is set to begin Thursday afternoon and last through late Thursday night, impacting areas above 6,000 feet. Snowfall totals could reach 8 to 15 inches in the Mogollon Rim and up to a foot in the Kaibab Plateau. Winds may gust up to 45 mph, leading to blowing snow and hazardous driving conditions.
Travelers are urged to use extreme caution, as roads, especially bridges and overpasses, may become slick and hazardous. Officials recommend delaying travel if possible. Those who must travel should carry a winter survival kit, including tire chains, blankets, and emergency supplies.
