TUCSON, Ariz. – A Fall weather alert remains in effect across southern Arizona as rounds of heavy rain continue through Columbus Day, threatening flash flooding and travel disruptions across Pima and Cochise counties. Saturated soils and swollen washes could create dangerous driving conditions along I-10, I-19, and low-lying crossings by late Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, a Flood Watch covers much of southern Arizona from noon Saturday through Monday afternoon. Widespread rainfall totals between 1 and 3 inches are likely, with isolated higher amounts in mountain foothills and near the Santa Cruz and San Pedro river valleys. The heaviest rainfall is expected Sunday afternoon into Monday morning, when slow-moving thunderstorms may produce localized flash flooding.

Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roadways—“Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Residents near washes should be ready to move to higher ground if water rises quickly. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) warns that portions of I-10 near Benson and I-19 south of Green Valley may experience ponding or temporary lane closures.

Although conditions will begin to dry out by Tuesday, roads may remain slick through the holiday. Outdoor plans, including Columbus Day events and fall festivals, could face delays or cancellations. Once this system exits, sunny skies and warmer afternoons will return midweek, offering a welcome break for local fall outings and leaf-viewing trips.
